Unable to use latest xanmod [solved]

#1
I can no longer use xanmod and have been forced back to the generic kernel 4.10.0-42.

If I choose xanmod, on startup, it fails as  the kernel is not being found. I am being dropped into emergency mode.  My computer is

mb: asrock FM2A88X extreme6+
Memory: 14.6gb
CPU: AMD A10-4500 Radeon R4

what would you like me to post so as to resolve.

More detailed info about installation is needed, also please report the list of installed kernels. Exclamation
Which flavour? 4.4, 4.9 or 4.14? Have you tried to reinstall the kernel again?
Please report the result of these commands:
Code:
$ sudo dpkg -l | grep linux-image
$ sudo dpkg -l | grep linux-headers

Good point, however it's surprising to report a bug in this way, and it seems low knowledge about Linux procedures.
And this fact always means extended time to find a solution for the problem, issue or proposed bug. Sad

Good point, however it's surprising to report a bug in this way, and it seems low knowledge about Linux procedures.
And this fact always means extended time to find a solution for the problem, issue or proposed bug. Sad

I hope not as I have been using Xanmod since I joined and have not had any problems like this. It is fairer for all for me to acknowledge superior knowledge than pretend to have the same.

Well.. first glance it seems as you have an awful lot of kernels installed.

What do you get when you boot with a working kernel and do : uname -a

Have you run: sudo apt-get autoremove
in a while? That might atleast clean up some of the old/obsolete ubuntu kernels.

Another thing you could try is to install "ubuntu-tweak" by following http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2016...ntu-16-04/

When you start Ubuntu Tweak, under the "janitor" tab, you have an checkbox with "Old Kernel". Tick this, and select all the xanmod kernels that you do not want to run anymore (checkbox) and press "clean". You then have to type in your sudo password a couple of times. After this is done, do the same for "Package Configs" checkbox.

Reboot after this. Ubuntu Tweak CANNOT delete the running kernel (that you see if you type: uname -a), so it is not a extremely dangerous method to clean out old kernels, although im sure  as in everything Linux, there is a million ways to do exactly the same...

Hopefully you have cleaned out most of the unneded kernels that way, and you could try to install xanmod kernel again after the reboot.

And just so it has been asked: What EXACTLY does the message with "kernel not found" say? Smile

OK, there is obviously a great lack of maintenance about kernels.
I also think that this can cause low space on your hard disk sometime.
You should remove all the old kernels and left only (at least) the latest ones.

I agree @CybDex instructions, and please read carefully next links:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/2793/how...-boot-menu
https://forum.xanmod.org/thread-30.html

Anyway, the classic "old" method that never fails:

This should work, however please be very careful!

Code:
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-4.10.0-2*-generic
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-4.10.0-3*-generic
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-4.8.0-*-generic
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-4.10.0-40-generic
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-4.9.4*-xanmod*
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-4.9.5*-xanmod*
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-4.9.6*-xanmod*
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-4.9.71-xanmod76
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-4.9.72-xanmod77
Code:

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-extra-4.10.0-2*-generic
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-extra-4.10.0-3*-generic
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-extra-4.10.0-40-generic
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-extra-4.8.0-*-generic
Code:
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.10.0-3*
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.10.0-3*-generic
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.10.0-40
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.10.0-40-generic
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.9.49-xanmod55
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.9.5*-xanmod*
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.9.6*-xanmod*
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.9.72-xanmod77

If all these commands of above worked fine, list images and headers again:
Code:
$ sudo dpkg -l | grep linux-image
$ sudo dpkg -l | grep linux-headers

And these should be the results about what images/headers you have:

----------
ii  linux-headers-4.10.0-42  4.10.0-42.46~16.04.1  all  Header files related to Linux kernel version 4.10.0
ii  linux-headers-4.10.0-42-generic   4.10.0-42.46~16.04.1  amd64  Linux kernel headers for version 4.10.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii  linux-headers-4.14.10-xanmod14    1.171230   amd64   Linux kernel headers for 4.14.10-xanmod14 on amd64
ii  linux-headers-4.9.73-xanmod78   1.171230   amd64  Linux kernel headers for 4.9.73-xanmod78 on amd64
ii  linux-headers-generic-hwe-16.04   4.10.0.42.44  amd64  Generic Linux kernel headers
-----------
ii  linux-image-4.10.0-42-generic  4.10.0-42.46~16.04.1  amd64   Linux kernel image for version 4.10.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii  linux-image-4.14.10-xanmod14   1.171230  amd64  Linux kernel, version 4.14.10-xanmod14
ii  linux-image-4.9.73-xanmod78   1.171230   amd64   Linux kernel, version 4.9.73-xanmod78
ii  linux-image-extra-4.10.0-42-generic  4.10.0-42.46~16.04.1  amd64  Linux kernel extra modules for version 4.10.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
-----------

Also you can perform an useful maintenance commands:
Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a && sudo apt-get -f install && sudo apt-get update --fix-missing && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get install --fix-broken && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get clean

I hope these instructions will help you in some way. Please maintain the feedback.

Thank you for your responses. They were gems of advice that I hope will help many others as well as me.

Following criticisms of the way I had reported my problem I decided that it would be best to do a reinstall of the OS. I have been effectively off line until now and have only now run the suggested command lines.

As per posting 6 above I now get the following output:
robins@robins-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg -l | grep linux-image
ii linux-image-4.10.0-42-generic 4.10.0-42.46~16.04.1 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 4.10.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-4.14.12-xanmod16 1.180105 amd64 Linux kernel, version 4.14.12-xanmod16
ii linux-image-4.8.0-36-generic 4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 4.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

ii linux-image-extra-4.8.0-36-generic 4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1 amd64 Linux kernel extra modules for version 4.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 4.10.0.42.44 amd64 Generic Linux kernel image
robins@robins-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg -l | grep linux-headers
ii linux-headers-4.10.0-42 4.10.0-42.46~16.04.1 all Header files related to Linux kernel version 4.10.0
ii linux-headers-4.10.0-42-generic 4.10.0-42.46~16.04.1 amd64 Linux kernel headers for version 4.10.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-headers-4.14.12-xanmod16 1.180105 amd64 Linux kernel headers for 4.14.12-xanmod16 on amd64
ii linux-headers-4.8.0-36 4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1 all Header files related to Linux kernel version 4.8.0
ii linux-headers-4.8.0-36-generic 4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1 amd64 Linux kernel headers for version 4.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-headers-generic-hwe-16.04 4.10.0.42.44 amd64 Generic Linux kernel headers
robins@robins-desktop:~$

I agree that I had a lot of kernels originally listed. I was very surprised to see that many because they were not showing in the grub!

You can also delete these ones:
Code:
ii  linux-image-4.8.0-36-generic 4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1 amd64  Linux kernel image for version 4.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii  linux-image-extra-4.8.0-36-generic  4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1   amd64   Linux kernel extra modules for version 4.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
*
ii  linux-headers-4.8.0-36  4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1   all Header files related to Linux kernel version 4.8.0
ii  linux-headers-4.8.0-36-generic   4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1  amd64  Linux kernel headers for version 4.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

However you need to take a decision about what kernels do you need for optimizing resources and time as well. Personally I always recommend to have at least the latest non-LTS flavour and the latest LTS (i.e. latest future 4.15/4.16 or whatever, and 4.14 LTS). In Linux every choice has its own problems (e.g. if you install just a single PPA you won't upgrade to 18.04 easily). Now you know how to perform minimal maintenance of kernels. Don't forget also the useful maintenance line from above. Glad to know your problem is solved, because Ubuntu is weak for some problems since the origin of the times and it probably won't ever get fixed.  Dodgy

The problem with having several versions of kernels installed, is that the system will keep them updated to the newest version..

Eg.
You have 4.8 kernel AND 4.10 AND 4.14 installed, they will ALL keep updating.
If you delete the 4.8 kernel "branch" it will no longer get updated, and you save having to do that each time. Ubuntu is likely to update minor versions of all "release" kernels at the same time (more or less), so when there is a new 4.10 kernel release, there could also be a new 4.8 kernel release, and you have to download and install them both every time.

Thus.. when you find a branch of kernel.. eg. 4.10, you keep that, and remove "older". Xanmod kernel is somewhat to be considered "experimental", so my personal advice would be to keep the 4.10 kernel as a backup...(or any other Ubuntu official release kernel) but as Tropic said, you should just delete the 4.8 branch.

Helpful info from Ubuntu https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RemoveOldKernels

Afaik Ubuntu keeps the current kernel and the last one.
If you have 4.10.0-105 kernel installed, and the new installed by auto-update is 4.10-106, they will be kept, but running:
Code:
sudo apt-get autoremove
after a reboot should remove 4.10.0-104 and older (of that branch).. Normally tho, but as i said above, if you have the 4.8 branch aswell, that too will be kept at newest + previous at all times (2 extra kernels you never use)

@CybDex I agree all your words. Furthermore today 4.10 Ubuntu series have been replaced by 4.13 series. Smile
